On Thursday July 18,
2013 Head of Operations of Mainstreet Bank, Ankpa branch in Kogi, Mr Mohammed
Umar was arraigned before a Lokoja Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly
defrauding the bank of N37.5 million. The fraud was discovered by the bank and
reported to the police on April 4. It was
alleged that the accused perpetrated that fraud through unauthorized cheques
debiting various customers’ accounts without their consent.
The accused was also
alleged to be manipulating customers’ accounts by debiting them each time
deposits were made and diverting such monies to his personal use. He was
alleged to have used the money allegedly embezzled to purchase four vehicles, a
KIA Cerato with registeration number BG 699 ABJ; a Peugeot 504 with
registeration number CG 469 RBC and two Toyota Hiace buses with registration
numbers XG 164 SMK and XB 981 MNA.
He was also said to
have built and completed a two bedroom flat at Ajobe village near Ankpa, built
and equipped a Cassava Processing plant at Ojapata and a publishing business
office in Anyigba.
The banker who was
charged with criminal breach of trust, criminal misappropriation and cheating
contrary to sections 312, 309 and 322 of the Penal Code pleaded not guilty of
the charges.
